PROLOGUE

The ultimate goal of immunization is eradication of disease; the immediate goal is prevention of disease in individuals or groups. To accomplish these goals, physicians must maintain timely immunization, including both active and passive immunoprophylaxis, as a high priority in the care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
