INTRODUCTION

Fluoroquinolones

Use of fluoroquinolones (for example, ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, lomefloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, and trovafloxacin) generally is contraindicated, according to FDA-approved product labeling, in children and adolescents younger than 18 years of age, because fluoroquinolones have been shown to cause cartilage damage in every juvenile animal model tested at doses that approximate those needed to be therapeutic.
