MEDICAL EVALUATION OF INTERNATIONALLY ADOPTED CHILDREN FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Viral Hepatitis
The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in internationally adopted children ranges from 1% to 5%, depending on the country of origin and year studied. Prevalence of markers of past hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is higher. Hepatitis B virus infection is most prevalent in adoptees from Asia, Africa, and some countries in central and Eastern Europe (eg, Romania) and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union (eg, Russia and Ukraine).
