Staphylococcal Infections

Staphylococcal Infections. 2 year-old with a bad diaper rash. This child has had peeling skin noted in the groin after parent requested a cream for his diaper rash. This was noted during a diaper change. They changed diaper brands with worsening of the peeling the next day. Physical examination indicated classic desquamation in the perineal area extending to the inner thighs. The diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome was reinforced by the finding of multiple pustules in the scalp consistent with traction folliculitis. Culture of the lesions yielded S. aureus.
