Haemophilus influenzae Infections. This is an inferior view of a brain infected with gram-negative Haemophilus influenzae bacteria. In the U.S. and other industrialized countries, more than 50% of H influenzae serotype b cases present as meningitis with fever, headache, and stiff neck. 3%-6% of cases are fatal; up to 20% of surviving patients have permanent hearing loss.
