Legionella pneumophila Infections. This micrograph depicts the results of using the fluorescent antibody technique to confirm the presence of Legionella pneumophila bacteria in this tissue sample from a victim of the 1976 Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Philadelphia. Due to the efforts of the epidemiologic investigators involved in the 1976 Legionnaires' disease outbreak, now laboratories all over the world can identify the Legionnaires' disease bacterium using the Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay. (IFA).
